Ria Rio City Park

Finally, I was able to visit Ria Rio City Park [ Taman Kota Ria Rio ] or Ria Rio Reservoir Park as it's right on the edge of Ria Rio Reservoir. The park had become a byword for the people of Jakarta in particular, apart from Pluit Reservoir and Blog G Tanah Abang Market, since it was one of the traces of the work of DKI Governor Joko Widodo at that time. The park can be accessed from Kayu Putih - Pulo Mas or from the Bypass street, East Jakarta.

At that time we came from the direction of Jatinegara through the bypass or Jl Ahmad Yani, turned around at the Cempaka Putih red light via the flyover back towards Jatinegara, then entered the first road to the left. The gates of East Jakarta Ria Rio City Park are still simple, guarded by security officer. The normalization of the Ria Rio Reservoir was still incomplete at that time, and park facilities still had to be monitored.

On the west side of Ria Rio Reservoir had been planted with tree trunks which in 5-10 years will become an urban forest. White storks looking for food on the outskirts of the Ria Rio Reservoir were also a sight to be enjoyed. This low-cost family tourism park in East Jakarta which uses the concept of terracing to ward off floods was completed by the end of 2015.

At Ria Rio City Park there's a large, tall tree that had not yet had thick leaves and was still supported by bamboo stalks. The name of the tree is Baobab (Adansonia digitata), a long-aged tree which trunk holds water, while the fruit and leaves are nutritious and for cooking.

The majestic tree is said to reach a height of up to 30 meters with a trunk diameter of 7 meters. Unbelievably big and tall. This park, which is the lungs of the city, was a proof of Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's fast and real work during his less than two years service as Governor of DKI.

While continue walking following the track at the Ria Rio City Park we came across another Baobab tree, and this one was truly unique and very beautiful, planted on top of a mound. The tree was old when it's cut and grown again, so that the rootstock was large in diameter while the upper trunk was small and so were the branches.

There's a pedestrian path with paving blocks wide that had been neatly made, connecting the area around the parking lot with the end part of Ria Rio City Park. Along the path in this park there were a number of points where the "Jokowi Benches" were provided, which had cast iron frames and seat and back cover made of wood.

In the middle area of Ria Rio City Park there's an open space on the edge of the reservoir which was in a semicircular shape, bordered by plants along the rim of the reservoir. The place was suitable for unplug music performances. Taman Suropati already plays music on weekends, maybe no one has played music in this park yet.

Yang Liu

Apart from the Baobab, there's also a shade tree for garden and house of Yang Liu (Salix babylonia) with waving leaves which trunk can be used as raw material for furniture. Ketapang Kencana (Bucida molineti) also exists, with a layered canopy, up to 3m high, 1.5m wide, and commonly used as an ornamental plant, cover crop, and boat building material.

Stepping a few dozen swings we arrived at the roundabout, where Jokowi's benches were installed. Before arriving at the roundabout, a Wifi landmark was seen, as well as a nice and descriptive plant name landmark. In Ria Rio Reservoir Park, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has provided free Wifi with the password of "pulomasjaya".

Further deeper into the park there were a bunch of Japanese jasmine plants that grow densely and were fertile and had lots of flowers. Slightly backwards, several types of orchids with dominant white and red flowers had also developed. This section was a part of a garden that so far looked very pleasing to the eyes.

There's an inscription marking the inauguration of the park which was carried out on 13 November 2013 at the beginning of this area. In addition, there were Gambir Jasmine flowers which also have fragrant flowers, as well as the Bismarkia Palm, which stems were not too tall with long branches and broad leaves, perfect for a garden like this.

The condition of Ria Rio City Park should be better now and the plants and trees should be much lush and shady than what are shown in the photos.
