Google Meet is Now Free to Everyone, Here is How to Use It

Just recently there's an email from Google telling me that Google Meet's free to everyone. That's because a few days earlier I signed in to a Google's page to get notification when the Meet is already available to everyone for free.

Google Meet is a video conferencing app which was available only to Google's G Suite users. A paid subscription based service. Now, you just need a regular Google Account to create an online meeting with up to 100 participants and for up to 60 minutes per meeting.

As a gesture to support society during COVID-19 pandemic physical distancing strict measures, the Meet is available up to 24 hours per meeting through September 30, 2020. While business, schools, and organizations, can use premium features that enable them to organize meetings with up to 250 participants and arrange live streaming to up to 100,000 viewers.

Google Meet is Now Free to Everyone How to Use It

There are two ways to use Google Meet, whether to organize a meeting or participate in a meeting organized by your friend. If you prefer using desktop or notebook computer, then no download is required. You may start or join a meeting from any latest browser. No software needs to be installed.

If you want to use tablet or mobile phone, then you need to download Google Meet mobile app from Google Play Store for Android users or Apple Store for iPhone or iPad users.

Here are steps you need to do to use Google Meet, either with browser or mobile app.

  1. Login to Google Meet or to Google Meet mobile app with your Gmail or Google Account.
  2. Once inside the app, there are two main menus that you can use:

    Start a meeting, or
    Enter meeting code to join a meeting organized by others.

    For desktop or notebook users, there's another menu available to Schedule a video meeting from Google Calendar, while for mobile phone you can create a Google Meet video meeting directly from your Google Calendar app.
  3. To start a meeting immediately, click 'Start a meeting'.

    Your web cam will be immediately active, there's a 'Meeting ready' message and a meeting code that you can use to invite friends to join using WhatsApp or other messaging apps.
  4. Click 'Join now' to open pop up window containing the meeting code and icon to Add people to join your video meeting.

    Under the Invite section, select a name, or enter an email address and click Send invite.

Once you are in the 'meeting room', there are a couple of menus and icons that you need to familiarize with as seen in the below image.

A menu not seen in the above picture is to turn on and off captions. If turns on it will display text of conversation during the meeting, if it is conducted in English.

In the 'Present now' menu you can choose to share: Your entire screen, A window (of your screen), or A Chrom tab which is best for video and animation. You may need to familiarize and to practice on how to use this menu before using it in your meeting.

Schedule a video meeting

You can schedule a video meeting using Google Calendar in your mobile phone, or from Google Meet desktop. Here are steps to schedule a video meeting from Google Calendar:

  1. In Calendar, create an event. Set meeting title, time and date.
  2. Click 'Add guests' and enter the names or email of the people you want to invite.
  3. Click 'Add video conferencing'. The video meeting link will be automatically created immediately.
  4. Click Save.

Note: your guests may forward the meeting link to other people, but they can join the meeting after being admitted or approved by you. Have a happy meeting.
